Game 1 - Albany at Mississippi

Pitching duel of sorts. Lester is replaced after 4 1/3 after giving up 5 hits and 4 BB's without allowing anyone to cross home plate. Oswalt is dominant, but is pulled with (1) out in the 6th and the bases loaded. In an usual move, The Albany skipper calls for his closer, Kuo who retires Dunn on a long FB (SF) and then K's Weeks to end the threat. Albany finally breaks through with a 2 out clutch run scoring single from PH Yorvit Torrealba to knot the game late. Albany scores the winning run in the 9th when PR M Brantley (running for Luke Scott who led off with a 1B), steals 2B and scores on a single by S Drew.

Oswalt pitched like an Ace, going 8 1/3 innings for the win. The Internationals, Kelly Johnson led off the home half of the 1st with a HR. Pujols led off the 4th with a solo HR, Wright doubled and scored on a Torrealba single. The Orange avoided a big inning when Ethier PHitting for Upton K'd with the bases loaded to end the inning. The Orange mustered their biggest threat in the 6th. With 2 outs and a man on 1st, Zimmerman doubled and Thome BB'd to load the bases. Albany elected to keep Oswalt in the game to pitch to Tulowitzki who hit a double over CF A Jones head. Thome was waved home as the tying run and Torrealba (replacing V Martinez) successfully blocked the plate to preserve the lead! Luke Scott and S Drew opened the 8th with back to back singles, and K Johnson hit a long fly that scored PR, M Brantley to provide some breathing room. Oswalt came out to start the 9th, and was replaced after a Tulo one out 2B hit by Kuo who preserved the victory by King the last 2 batters.

Tulo had 2 hits and the big bases loaded 2B for the Orange; KJohnson had 2 hits and 2 RBI's, Wright and Drew each had 2 hits, and Albert hit a HR and BB'd twice for the Internationals who left (6) men in scoring position to make the game close.

Game 5 - Mississippi at Albany

Chris Carpenter saved the Big Orange season shutting out the Internationals into the 7th. Lilly pitched well, but was done in by Albany OF defense. Luke Scott's 2 base error in the 4th and Upton's wild throw trying to nail the runner at home in the 6th resulted in (2) unearned runs. Didn't really matter. The Internationals failed to capitalize on a 2b-3b with no outs in the second, and rarely threatened after that. The Big Orange win two of three at Internationals park to send the series back to Mississippi.

Hawpe 3-4 (2) 2B's for the Orange, and Ethier was 3-4 for the Internationals; Langerhans made a surprise start in place of Luke Scott, and made the error allowing the first runs to score, was thrown out attempting to steal, and K'd with the bases loaded. Yikes.

Game 6 - Albany at Mississippi

Rematch of Billingsley vs Bucholtz. Albany mgr. considered Padilla, but decided to stick with Billingsley's higher OBA versus Padilla's higher HRA. In the 2nd, Albany's clutch hitting (rolls) finally occur. Youkilis doubled with one out. Then with 2 outs, (3) consecutive singles by Torrealba, Drew, and Upton plated 2 runs. meanwhile Billingsley escaped first and third jams in the 1st and 2nd, and lead-off baserunners in the 3rd and 4th, before finally being pulled with runners on 1st and 3rd (again!) in the 5th with 2 outs. Mark Rogers secured his spot on the Albany 2012 roster by striking out A Dunn to end the threat in the 5th. Dunn's two out run scoring double cut the Albany lead to a big fly- but it was small ball that was the difference in the 8th. Dunn and Zimmerman lead off the 8th with back to back singles. Sean Burnett, the Albany pitcher was replace by Kuo in a risky move given the depleted bullpen. With 0 outs, Maier was asked to squeeze- a 48% chance to score the tying run. The gutsy (but statistically sound!) call backfired as Maier missed the pitch and Thome was nailed at the plate! Zimmerman advance to 2B, but Granderson and Doumit both flied out to end the threat. Interesting side note- this was the second time iin the series Thome was out at the plate trying to score the tying run. Kuo retired the side in order in the 9th to give the WS title to the Albany Internationals who improbably swept the mighty Big Orange at their home field. 18 men were left on base during the game, and the Big Orange failed to hit a HR in any of the (4) losses.

The Michigan Mad Dogs are the new GUSSOMO champions!
Michigan defeated Albany 4-0 in the World Series to take their first championship in their fourth try.

 

GAME 1

Michigan jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Albany tied it up in the fifth inning. Michigan scored one in the seventh, and then Albany tied back up in the top of the 9th, which included Albany manager controversially pinch hitting for league MVP Albert Pujols, who had homered earlier in the game, with Russell Branyan, who then hit the game-tying RBI double. It turned out to be for naught, though, as MVP runner-up Chase Utley hit the game-winning home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning. Tom Gorzelanny picked up the win for the Mad Dogs, and Alfredo Aceves was saddled with the loss for Albany.

GAME 2

The Mad Dogs jumped all over Internationals losing starter Chad Billingsley, scoring six runs in the first four innings. Albany scored one in the third and two in the fifth to keep it interesting, but Carlos Zambrano kept them at arms' length to get the victory, and the Michigan bullpen pitched four scoreless innings to preserve the lead.

GAME 3

Michigan once again built an early lead against Albany starter and eventual loser Scott Baker, scoring four runs in the first, and building their lead to 8-0 on the strength of three home runs before Albany stormed back with three runs in the seventh and eighth innings off of Michigan starter Ricky Nolasco and relievers Tom Gorzelanny and Brandon Morrow to make the score 8-6 before Michigan closer Jonathan Papelbon defused the rally in the eighth for his first save of the series.

GAME 4

Michigan got on the board first with runs in the third and fourth innings before Albany busted out for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. But Michigan took the lead back in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run single from Shin-Soo Choo. Albany threatened in the 9th inning, loading the bases on three walks from Phil Hughes with only one out, but Hughes was able to rally back and record two strikeouts to end the game. Cliff Lee collected the win, and Roy Oswalt was the tough-luck loser.

 

In all, most of the games were pretty close and could have gone either way. Michigan benefitted from some good luck with the split cards and some timely love from the X-chart. The playoff MVP for Michigan was Adam Lind, who over three series hit .392 with eight home runs and 20 RBI. Michigan won in the playoffs the same way it did in the regular season, scoring 110 runs and hitting 39 home runs over 14 games.

The Seattle Pilots managed to end a 25 year drought with its very first GUSSOMO World Championship today. Seattle battled the Michigan Mad Dogs in what was definitely a pitcher's Series, winning four games to two. The games are summarized below.

This series was a battle of two very strong pitching staffs and most were very low-scoring affairs with the outcome in doubt right up to the last at bat. Will and I both agreed that Dan Haren had earned the World Series MVP after his Game 6 performance.

I'd like to thank Will for a great series and for being such a gentleman in the face of such torment from the baseball gods. The Pilots faced three powerful, outstanding teams in the playoffs, each with 100 or more wins in the regular season, and they managed to find a way to eke by each one. Which should stand as a powerful testament to that timeless Law of Life:

'It's better to be lucky than good.'

WORLD SERIES RECAP

Game # 1

Cliff Lee opened the series with a gem, holdng the Pilots to 2 hits over 8 innings. Johan Santana matched Lee, giving up just 2 hits of his own in 7 innings. But the Mad Dogs manufactured a run in the 8th and Jonathan Papelbon slammed the door with his first save of the series.

 

Game # 2

Game 2 is the game that will define the Series. The Pilots went into the 9th inning down five runs and facing a grim trip home, winless in Michigan. Ricky Nolasco had been brilliant through eight and looked to finish what he started. Randy Winn (who hit .364 and was the Mad Dog's nemesis throughout the series) led off with a double and was followed by Grady Sizemore's only dinger of the series. The score was now 7-4 and manager Polumbo had seen enough. Jonathan Papelbon was summoned from the bullpen to close it out.

Papelbon walked Miguel Cabrera but struck out the dangerous Adrian Gonzalez. Then the door opened to the Twilight Zone. Carlos Guillen and three pinch-hitters plinked four straight singles off the premier closer and tied the game at 7-7. After out number two, Randy Winn returned for his second AB of the inning and he promptly stroked a single to drive in the go-ahead run. George Sherrill and Joe Nathan set the Mad Dogs down in order in the bottom of the 9th to preserve the improbable comeback.

The freakiness continued in Game 3. Zambrano and the pen teamed up to shut out Seattle through eight innings. Dan Haren was almost as effective pitching into the 8th, giving up just one run on a Chase Utley rbi single in the 2nd. So Papelbon opened the 9th with a 1-0 lead. Adrian Gonzalez met him immediately with a game-tying solo shot. Papelbon then shut the Pilots down for two innings but gave way to Jonathan Sanchez in the 11th who walked Sizemore. Doug Waechter then came on to face Miguel Cabrera who promptly hit his third homer in three games.

 

Game # 4

Johan Santana had better luck in his second outing, scattering 5 hits in 8 innings. The Pilots seemed to solve Cliff Lee this time getting to the Cy Young winner for 12 hits in 6 innings. Seattle jumped out to a 3 games to 1 lead in the only contest that wasn't packed with tension from beginning to end. Randy Winn continued to pester Michigan going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's.

Nolasco, Arredondo & Papelbon combined to dominate Seattle with a 3-hit shutout. Zach Greinke and most of the Pilot bullpen managed to keep the game in doubt to the very end but it turned out that Aramis Ramirez 6th inning RBI single was enough to do the job and send the series back to Michigan.

Dan Haren pitched the game of his career to nail down the deciding game of the Series. Haren pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out 12. Only one of five baserunners reached second base. Adrian Gonzalez 4th inning home run was the only offense needed to nail down Seattle's first World Championship.

 

LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

 

ANTIOCH at MICHIGAN
(MICHIGAN WINS 4 GAMES TO 1 GAME, AWAITING WINNER OF FENWAY and SEATTLE)

Game # 1

Second baseman Chase Utley lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI at Napolean Park where the Michigan Mad Dogs beat the Antioch Coal Miners by the score of 6 to 3.

Michigan came up with 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning with the help of 5 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Ricky Nolasco (1-0) and Michigan. That was all the run support Nolasco required. Michigan had 10 hits for the night while Antioch had 7.

Nolasco got relief help from Dan Giese who gained credit for his 1st save. Paul Maholm(0-1) ended up with the loss. He surrendered 6 runs and 10 hits in 8 innings.

Game # 2

Cliff Lee pitched a complete game shutout as the Michigan Mad Dogs defeatedthe Antioch Coal Miners by a score of 9 to 0 at Napolean Park.

Lee (2-0) pitched well for Michigan in their victory. He surrendered 9 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 1.40. Michigan rapped out 10 hits for the night.

 Doug Davis ( 0-1) was hit with the loss. He allowed Michigan 9 runs in 8 innings of work.

Game # 3

Carlos Quentin smashed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Antioch Coal Miners topped the Michigan Mad Dogs by a score of 5 to 4 at The Coal Mine.

Quentin enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He smacked a three-run homer in the 1st inning, doubled in the 2nd inning, singled in the 5th inning and blasted a solo shot (his 3rd of the season) in the 7th inning. Antioch had 10 hits for the night.

Barry Zito (1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 7 innings. Zito got help from Arthur Rhodes who earned his 1st save. Jose Arredondo (1-1) was charged with the loss in relief.

"I felt great out there tonight," Quentin said, "Maybe I should make a regular habit of getting to bed on time!"

Game # 4

In a good matchup it was the Michigan Mad Dogs 4, the Antioch Coal Miners 2 at The Coal Mine.

Michigan claimed the early lead in the first inning plating an isolated run on 2 hits. Antioch went down quietly in the bottom of the 9th.

The victory went to Ricky Nolasco (2-0) who went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. Nolasco got relief help from Jonathan Papelbon who gained credit for his 3rd save. Paul Maholm (0-2) absorbed the loss.

"I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky," Nolasco said, "this was one of those times."

Game # 5

At The Coal Mine the Michigan Mad Dogs outscored the Antioch Coal Miners 4 to 1.

Michigan started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the first scoring one runner. After an out was recorded, Chase Utley

providing the offense himself as he belted a solo home run (his 2nd of the season). Michigan banged out 7 hits on the night.

Cliff Lee (3-0) went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Jonathan Papelbon gained credit for his 4th save. Doug Davis (0-2) was given the loss.

 

1st ROUND PLAYOFFS

ANTIOCH versus ALBANY (1st Round Playoffs)

 

In a series that evoked memories of the 1960 World Series between the Yankees & the Pirates, Albany dominated Antioch but lost in 7 games.

Game # 1

Antioch takes Game 1 in NY by a score of 6-2. Jon Garland got the win with Chad Billingsley taking the loss. Antioch scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning which would prove to be enough for the win. Pedroia was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and Adam Jones was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. Carlos Pena hit the only HR of the game.

Game # 2

Albany takes Game 2 in NY, pummeling Antioch 12-2. Russell Branyan led the way against his old team (Antioch) by slamming 2 HRs and knocking in 6 runs. Albert Pujols 3 for 5 2 RBI, 2 runs and a HR & Brian Giles 2 for 3 with 4 runs scored contributed to the onlslaught. Roy Oswal got the win going 8 2/3 innnings. Jayson Werth and Carlos Pena hit homeruns for Antioch. John Maine took the loss giving up 12 ER in a complete game performance.

Game # 3

The playoffs move to California where Albany drubs Antioch 17-1 with Scott Baker getting the complete game victory and Paul Maholm giving up 17 ER in 9 ip. Carlos Pena hit the only HR in the game which gave him a HR in each of the 1st 3 games. Albany got 17 runs without the benefit of a HR but having 17 hits and 14 walks. B.J. Upton went 4 for 7 with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored, Victor Martinez went 4 for 4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored, David Wright went 2 for 2 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored, Milton Bradley went 1 for 3 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored and Brian Giles went 2 fo 5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Pedroia went 3 for 4 for Antioch.

Game # 4

The pivotal game of the playoffs. Chad Billingsley started for Albany and Doug Davis started for Antioch in a game decided by the bullpens. Albany took a 7-6 lead into the bottom of the 9th with Jeff Nelson retiring the 1st two batters, Cesar Izturis on a pop to 2B and Pedroia on a ground out to SS. Jamey Carroll singled up the middle and Jayson Werth ended the game with a walk off HR. Upton and Ianetta homered for Albany with Quentin and Werth homering for Antioch.

Game # 5

Albany pounds Antioch 10-3 taking a 3-2 lead in the playoff series with Games 6 & 7 moving to NY. Oswalt took a no hitter into the 8th inning before losing it on a single to Adam Jones. Pujols and Iannetta homered for Albany while Carroll and Carlos Pena #4 homered late for Antioch.

Game # 6

Antioch traveled to NY and engaged Albany in a pitching duel that was scoreless after 7 innings. John Maine of Antioch Vs. Scott Baker of Albany. Ludwick led of the 8th with a HBP followed by a single from Carlos Quentin. Dukes struck out, but, Jarrod Saltalamacchia came up with a clutch double, driving in 2 runs, Izturis followed with a single to give Antioch 3 of the 5 runs they would score. Albany was unable to mount any sort of rally against John Maine who went the distance for a shutout, giving up 5 hits, a walk and striking out 12.

Game # 7

Albany took a 3-2 lead into the 7th inning. Carlos Quentin struck out and was followed by Saltalamacchia (BB), Jones (1B) and Izturis (BB) to load the bases. Pedroia struck out for the 2nd out. Conor Jackson PH for Jayson Werth and delivered a 2 out 1B to give Antioch a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the 9th, Upton flew out to right and Brian Giles tripled to right center. Steven Shell issued intentional walks to Albert Pujos and Moises Alou to load the bases for Kelly Johnson. Antioch brought in Arthur Rhodes, a dominating lefty knowing that only Jack Cust was available to PH. Rhodes struck out Johnson and then struck out left-handed hitting Fontenot to save the game for Antioch and propel Antioch into the 2nd round,

Antioch was out-played by Albany, but, Albany didn't get the rolls. With my luck, I think I will go out and buy a lotto ticket.

2002 PLAYOFF AND WORLD SERIES RECAP

 CHAMPAGNE??.... NO WAY! ....
.... IT'S CHIANTI ....
AS THE
ITALIAN STALLIONS CELEBRATE THEIR
7 GAME VICTORY OVER THE WRIGLEY RAIDERS IN THE
2002 G.U.S.S.O.M.O. WORLD SERIES....
As game 6 is about to begin, Stallion managment introduces some of the remaining members of the last great Stallion championship team...members of the '89 Stallions come out to inspire the new guys...led by team captain Tom Pagnozzi....old hero's such as Eddie Murray, Tommy Herr,
Gary Templeton, Andy Van Slyke, Steve Bedrosian, Mike Portugal, Ozzie Virgil .... try to inspire the '02 Stallions to their 2nd championship.....

Game 6..... John Burkett verus Glendon Rusch

The Stallions with 45,000 fans in the Dome get of to good start in 1st inning. J.D. Drew reaches on a error. Jeff Cirrilo hits a Single, Richard Walks and Jim Edmondss goes... back... back... back.... gone.... for a 4-0 Stallion lead!

In the 3rd inning, Moises Alou takes Rusch deep as the Raiders squander a good chance.. "A-Rod" hits a 6-4-3 to Vizqual to stop a chance at a big inning ....as Wrigley uses a Home Run, two Singles and a Walk for only 1 run.

Feeling the pressure mounting in the 3rd, Burkett blows up....a Walk, a Force Out, 3 more Walks and a Wild Pitch and a ground out give the Stallions 3 more runs and a 7-1 lead. (The fans are chanting.... Game 7..... Game 7.... Game 7). In the 4th, Wrigley, refusing to give up, gets a
Single, a Double and another Home Run from Moises Alou. Scott Strickland comes in to pitch.... gives up a Home Run... but then settles down to get out of the inning.

In the 6th inning, the Stallions play some "little ball" and combine two Singles and 3 more Walks plus an Error for 3 more runs to wrap up the game with an easy 10-4 win

 Game 7

Inspiration and emotion prevails as Daryl (# 57) Kile gets the nod for the Stallions versus Lefty Al Leiter. Mike Lieberthal and Mark McGwire get a chance at a lefty. This will be all time Stallion great McGwire's last appearance (although he has been promised a roster spot for life).

1st inning.... Raiders go down 1-2-3

The Stallions, after recieving 10 walks in game 6 are going to be patient once again. This strategy pays off. In the bottom of the 1st, Durham Walks to start things off... then is bunted to 2nd. Sanders grounds out... Gonzalez is Intentionally Walked. Mike Lieberthal and McGwire Walk. With two
outs, Jim Edmonds hits a Double of the wall in Right Field to make the score 3-0 Stalllions!

The game settles down a bit as Kile and Leiter both hold their control until the bottom of the 4th.

Geoff Blum leads off with yet another walk. Viqual, trying to sacrifice, beats out the bunt for a hit. Durham, also trying to sacrifice, beats his bunt out for a hit. Jeff Cirrilo hits a fly to CF that gets thrown away on the attempt to get the man at home. Two more runs more score... and the Stallions
have a huge 6-0 lead. After a Sanders Strikeout, Gonzalez walks. Lieberthal hits a "Gapper" for a Double that scores Gonzalez and brings the Stallion lead to 8-0. "Big Mac" then puts the Raiders out of thier misery with a 543 foot Home Run to Center for a 10-0 Stallion lead.

Daryl Kile gives up 3 more hits but leads the Stallions to a 10-0 7th game win!

Game 3 has been played and the Wrigley Raiders won it to pull within one game of the Stallions who now lead the series two games to one! The final score was 5-3 with A-Rod leading a 12 hit assault on Stallion starter Kile!! Manager Don Sprague, after a few beers, determined that a change in the
pitching rotation would be required if the Raiders had any chance against this high powered offensive team. Therefore, he went to Al Leiter to start in lieu of Rick Reed to try to shutdown those big lefty bats on the Stallions! Al pitched 8 2/3 innings of 6 hit baseball while striking out 9 big Stallion hitters.

Game 4 will match Kevin Tapani against surprise starter Omar Daal!!

Wrigley Game 4:

Stallions lead the series two games to one...Daal on the mound for Wrigley and Tapini for the Stallions...Stallions take a quick lead as in game 3 and expand it to 2 to 0 in the top of the 3rd. Wrigley scores 1 in the 3rd and 6th to tie the game at 2-2 after 6 innings. In the bottom of the 8th
Frank Catalanotto Jacked a one out three run BLAST to win it or Wrigley.

Wrigley Game 5:

Series tied 2 games each...Morris on the hill for the Stallions and Oswalt for the Raiders. Once again the Stallions jump to a quick one run lead and expand it to two runs at the end of three. In the bottom of the 4th Phil Nevin hit a 3 run Blast to put Wrigley in front...Wrigley scored once more in the 5th and held on for the 4 to 2 win. Plesac, Wendell, Kline and Gordon shut the Stallions down over the last 2 1/3 innings.

We now move back to the Home of the Italian Stallions for the final game or two.

Stallions continue to roll with 2 easy wins..

Game # 1 ... Tapani wins his 3rd opening game. Although he allowed 7 hits in 5 1/3 innigs, his teammates supported him with a 7-0 lead. A Triple, Double and Single and a bunt lead to 2 runs in the 2nd. in the 2nd. Juan Gonzalez hits a 2-run HR in the 3rd ... and J.D. Drew hit a 3- run "dinger"
in the 4th. The Stallions coasted in from there. A-Rod did get 2 hits and a HR.

Game # 2 ... With "Ace" Matt Morris versus John Burkett, the Stallions score in 1st on Juan Gonzalez' single. With an early 1-0 lead, Morris allows only 2 hits until the 6th when "A-Rod" singles and Larry Walker goes deep to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the 6th, Jim Edmonds and Gonzalez walk. walks..gonzalez walks . After a Foul Out by Richard, Durham grounds out to move the runners up. "Big Mac" McGwire comes off the bench amd delivers a Double to give the Stallions the lead. Michael Tucker is then intentionally walked. Jay Powell comes in to pitch and promptly walks Vizqual. J.D Drew is due up next gets a Single and an Error on the pitcher. Jeff Cirrilo follows with a Double to give the Stallions a total of 6 runs in the 6th..

Morris gets the next 6 out in a row and Percival comes in to wrap it up in the 9 th. On to Wrigley for games 3, 4.... and more??
